DECEMBER 2011                Happy Holidays ~ Seasons Greetings

Dear NODA Members,

It is hard to believe but 2011 is over and we are about to begin 2012.  How fast the year seems to have passed.  A lot happened in the world, and in our little organization, too, over the past year.  In this month's NODA News we are looking at the fabulous time we had at our year end awards banquet, with pictures of all the award winners.   I hope that all in attendance had a wonderful time -- I know I did.  It was great to see all of you without riding boots and helmets.  We had a little contest called the "NODA Freestyle" where each table created a centerpiece from a bag of "stuff" and it really brought out the inner artist in everyone.  We had nice door prizes and fabulous raffle items.  Many thanks for the generous donations of all our sponsors.

By the time you read this letter, the stress of the Holidays will be pretty much over.  Left will be the taking down of decorations, shedding those few added pounds, and paying those Holiday bills.  The best part of the Holidays will always be time with family and friends.   We spend so much time running around getting all stressed out during the year but more so during the Holiday season.  We don't know how everything will get done, but it always seems to come together somehow.  I am not always sure how it happens but it does.  I hope you were able to take time to relax and enjoy the Holiday Season.

We are saddened at the sudden loss of NODA member Laura Wolfe.  Please see the "Memorial" on Laura and G. Lowell Boomer, a founder of the USDF, who also passed away in November, on page 26 of this publication.  Our condolences go out to Chris Goodall, Schooling Show Committee Co-Chair, on the loss of her young horse, Lukas.  Our hearts all go out to her.  You can find the story of Lukas in this issue on page 16.  Have a tissue handy.

Congratulations are in order to our cover girl, Lisa Gorretta, on being elected to the USDF Board of Delegates as the Activities At-Large Director.  Lisa has been a dedicated contributor to NODA, Region 2, and the USDF for a long time.  We are proud and grateful for all she does.  Thank you, Lisa.  You can find the entire announcement in this issue.

USDF has announced the most recent "L" graduates.  There were four from Region 2.  NODA is happy to say that two, Noel Williams and Sara Justice, are Ohio residents and NODA members.  Congratulations to both of you.  We look forward to seeing great things from you.

I hope you opened your latest issue of the USDF Connection and found the wonderful article about NODA's own Betsy Juliano.  It is the last in a four-part series that has been running in Connection about Betsy and her experience creating her first freestyle. It’s a lovely series about a great person and exceptional rider.  Betsy has been a long time NODA member and supporter.   We are proud of everything that she has accomplished and we thank her for her for all she does for NODA.

Mosie Welch has again done us proud with two amazing articles about NODA members and their horses.  Read about Barb Tuskas and San Andreas on page 6, and Patti Cifranic and Wila on page 14.  These stories by Mosie are bringing our NODA members and their horses into the spotlight, letting us learn more about our wonderful and diverse membership.

2012 will be an ambitious year for NODA.  We have the Region 2 Adult Clinic with Lilo Fore at Lake Erie College June 30th and July 1st.  We also plan to begin work to bring the Instructor Certification Workshops to Northeast Ohio.  These two rather large educational undertakings, plus our Schooling Show Series and Recognized Shows, should keep us all hopping.

If you are interested in helping out with anything NODA, please contact us.  Call or e-mail Kathy Kirchner (Member Liaison) or any board member and let us know what you’d like to do.  We are eager to have your help.  There are things that you can do that may not require you to travel to meetings.  A good example of this is Elizabeth Bross, Associate Newsletter Editor.  Elizabeth lives in Erie PA and attending regular NODA Board Meetings is impossible for her.  She uses her computer skills and works with Associate Editor Mosie Welch to put together our "NODA News" long distance.

Don't forget to set up your riding goals for 2012.  Make them achievable and track your progress.  I have set my goals, but at this point it is just between my trainer and me.

May the New Year bring you love and contentment, and may you have quality time with family, friends, and your riding partner!

Dee

NOVEMBER 2011

Dear NODA Members,

I can't believe how wonderful the weather was in early October.  The colors were spectacular and fall trail rides are the very best way to enjoy the outside.  There are many rumors and lots of science predicting a pretty nasty winter; in fact I have seen the words "brutally cold and snowy."   We are never ready for the cold and snow, but we are Ohio people and get through the inclement weather because we know that the winter weather will eventually yield to spring.

This issue of the NODA News has a lot of news, stories and pictures from the Region 2 Championships at Majestic Farms in Batavia, OH.   I was there and can say that in spite of the rain and sometimes cooler-than-normal temperatures, it was a wonderful show and we all had a blast.  There were lots of NODA members there and it was fun to see them away from our usual venues.   We are looking forward to being in Lexington next year.

October and November are big months for NODA and snail mail.
Watch your mail for two post cards and an invitation.   You should have already received a ballot for the election of the Executive Board and five Directors at Large for the two-year term beginning January 2012.   There are more than five (5) candidates for Directors at Large on the ballot.  It is important that you vote for five and return your ballot as directed.

You will also receive a post card to remind you to renew your membership.  Please read carefully as there are several changes.

* Membership Dues in general have increased
.  When USDF increased its dues last year, we chose to
not increase our rates and NODA absorbed the increase.

* Junior membership has been replaced with a "youth" membership
.  Please read the definition to make
sure you fall into what we hope is a better defined youth category.

* We know that many of you would like to have a hard copy of the Newsletter.  We are offering members the
    option of paying
a very small additional fee to receive the hard copy.

This year as in the past, if you renew you membership before the deadline of 12/1/2011, your name will be included in a drawing for a free 2013 membership.  We will have volunteers who can renew your membership at the November 19th banquet.   Look for them at the Membership Table.

Speaking of the banquet, you will also be receiving your invitation in the mail in early November.  EVERYONE IS INVITED TO NODA'S ANNUAL BANQUET.   The banquet is not just about getting awards; it is really about celebrating accomplishment, hard work, and fun.  It is about celebrating our NODA community, our friends, and our supportive families.   We will be having wonderful raffle items again this year, plus some fun games, and I know you won't want to miss the good food and fun.  Come celebrate NODA, Dressage, Family, and Friends.

When you got your notification for this November Newsletter we offered a new way to view it.  Our current PDF file is available for viewing but we had added a link that allows you to view the NODA News like a magazine.  It is very cool and gives members an option for reading in the current format or this new one.  Please try it and let us know what you think.  This is a free service and we think that it might be attractive not only to our members but also to our advertisers.    It is private and cannot be picked up in a Google search.  You need the link to view.

When you received your E-News notification for this November Newsletter, we offered a new way to view it.    Our current PDF file is available for viewing and downloading, AND we added a link that allows you to view the NODA News on-line like a magazine.  It is very cool and gives members an option for reading in the current format or this new on-line version.   Please try it and let us know what you think.  This is a free service and we think that it might be attractive not only to our members but also to our advertisers.    It is private and cannot be picked up in a Google search.  You need the URL link to view it which is available on the NEWSLETTER  page of the NODA Website.

As I submit this letter for publication, I am looking forward to the NODA Schooling Show and Schooling Show Championship October 15th and 16th.  I plan to be there and hope to take lots of pictures.

See you at the Banquet,
Dee

OCTOBER 2011

Dear NODA Members,

Fall, my favorite season, is upon us.  It is a wonderful time for trail riding and walking the dogs in the woods.  The aroma of fall is so refreshing, and the cooler night temperatures offers sleep with the windows open as a gift from Mother Nature.

The Rocky River schooling show finished the summer the same way it started it, WET!!!  Thank you to Margaret and her crew of volunteers for helping to make the day a splendid success.   Check out show notes, results, and pictures in this issue and on the web site.

I can't say enough to compliment the Schooling Show Committee, host barns, competitors, and the many volunteers for making this a very successful show season so far.  All the shows were full and the last two or three shows were full before closing date. and waiting lists became common place.  For NODA, our success depends on attendance.  Thank you for supporting this summer series.  We invite comments both positive and constructive, to help us to bring an even better season next year.

NODA's Championship show is coming up and if you qualified you have probably received your invitation by the time you get this Newsletter.  We look forward to seeing all qualified NODA members at Chagrin Valley Farms for the big event.  Remember that there is also an open show on Saturday.  Scores from that show will count for 2012.

Scores being submitted for yearend awards must be postmarked October 22 to be considered.  Please don't forget that you must also send 4 NODA bucks for each horse/rider combination.    Mail the 2011 form(s) to: Janeen Langowski, 4714 Southwood Drive, Brooklyn, Ohio 44144-3148.  Questions can be directed to Janeen at 440-660-6182 or email YearEnd-Awards@nodarider.org

We
hope you are signed up for or planning to audit the Reese Koffler-Stanfield Clinic, October 29th and 30th at Lake Erie College.  We have a full complement of riders for this clinic.  All levels will be represented, along with the opportunity to ask questions.   Not only will you be taking advantage of a wonderful learning opportunity, but you will also let us know that you want NODA to continue to make talent such as Reese available to our members at a reasonable cost.  Without support for these events, NODA will not be able to justify the expense.   Please come and bring your friends.  Auditors can sign up in advance or just come on the day of, but for lunch you must pre-register.  More information and registration forms are in this issue and on our website.

On a sad note, we have recently lost two area dressage enthusiasts.  Joan Hirsch, who contributed a great deal to NODA and to Region 2, passed away in August.  We also lost NODA member Elizabeth (Bette) Sayre Jenkinson, wife of Dan Crudele, the videographer and editor for our Video Project this past summer.  There is more information in this issue of the Newsletter and also on our website.   NODA has made donations in their honor to Fieldstone Farm TRC and the Dressage Foundation's Book of Memory.

We also mourn the loss of Charlotte Bayley's Grand Prix horse, Firecracker, who was put down recently due to complications from colic.

We have a nice issue this month, full of valuable information.  Please enjoy the wonderful article by Clara Etzel, part one of a two part series on her participation in the 3rd Annual Dressage Retreat at Equistride International in August.

NODA's own Cassandra Hummert-Johnson is back at school after a successful and exciting adventure in Gladstone.  We are so proud of our Juniors.  Jennifer Harding and Cassandra have really represented NODA in great fashion this year.  Lisa Gorretta was at Gladstone and snapped a picture of Cassandra which is posted on Website.   Also check out our

Facebook page for additional pictures from Mary Phelps.  Thanks to both for adding to our excitement by keeping us connected.

Have a wonderful October,

Dee

SEPTEMBER 2011

Dear NODA Members,

September is here already and it will be a busy month for NODA and NODA members.  Our Open Meeting is September 18th, and that is when we will present the slate of candidates for the two-year term beginning in 2012.  I hope if you are interested in running for a position on the NODA Board that you have already let our Dale Lappert, Parliamentarian, know.  But remember, we will also take nominations from the floor at the meeting.  Don't be shy.  NODA’s Board always needs and welcomes new people with new ideas.

September also brings the Region 2 Championships at Majestic Farm.  Good luck to all who have qualified and will be riding for a regional championship.  Have fun, bring home the ribbons, but most of all have fun.

There are still some openings to ride with Reese Koffler-Stanfield, October 29th and 30th.  Because these rides are being underwritten by a grant from the Dressage Foundation, they are only $100 for NODA members and Lake Erie Students.  Don't pass up this opportunity.  Visit our website or check out this issue of the NODA News to get an application.  This will also be a great clinic to audit.  There will be a lecture and Reese will take questions.  To learn more about Reese,  CLICK HERE.

I don't generally discuss my feelings in my monthly letters, but there is something I would like to say.  These past 18 months that I have been president of NODA have been a real education for me.  Even though I had been a very involved member for many years, I don't think I ever really understood or appreciated what a fabulous team NODA has.  I could say I have been taking a course called “NODA 101.”  I came to the office of NODA President in January of 2010 with a lot of trepidation.  I had some very big shoes to fill and was very nervous --  so nervous in fact, that I asked my husband, a clinical psychologist specializing in group therapy, to sit in on the first few meetings to give me feedback on what I might do to help meetings run smoothly.   That shaky start has led me these many months later to a place of excitement and hope, and the thought that I just might really be able to do this.  But, it isn't me that is doing it, it is all of you, the Board, the membership -- The Team!!!!

I have learned that the NODA team is made up of reliable, hardworking, and dedicated people who care deeply about the organization, the welfare of the horses, the sport of dressage, and their fellow NODA members.   Everyone has been so supportive and has helped me learn on the job.  I may never actually fill those all those really big shoes and I am not sure I should even try.  I just want to do the best job I can.  Thank you to the NODA team.  I appreciate every one of you so much.

Speaking of teams... how about that Recognized Show Team?!  I want to thank everyone who organized and pulled off our very successful Recognized Shows this year, including Robyn Ambrose, Mary Lou Gallagher,  Karen Eisenhauer, Suzanne Carlton, Judy Cagaeo-Catania, Kathy Kirchner, Katie Passarotti, and all the many volunteers who made the show a memorable event.  We are already talking about what we can add for next year.  A personal "Thank you" goes to Fran Cverna and Chris Goodall for filling in for me and taking pictures for our website and newsletter.

While talking about our NODA Team, I want to welcome two new members to our Board.  Mosie Welch and Elizabeth Bross will be do-chairing our Newsletter Committee as Associate Editors.  They will both be a great addition to our NODA Team.   This edition of the NODA News will be their first.  Please direct questions about advertising to Mosie at Mosie-editor@nodarider.org  and layout to Elizabeth-editor@nodarider.org.  Either are available to answer general questions about the newsletter or listen to ideas about articles.

A big "Thank you" to Niki Sackman who has been doing the NODA News since January of 2008.  Time flies.....as it seems like just yesterday she began.  Niki has done a great job.  She is organized and always got the Newsletter out on time.  When we were in need of content, she would write an article or add editorial comment.   Under Niki's  direction the NODA News won USDF best layout in 2010.  Niki was also instrumental in helping NODA " go green".  Niki, you will be missed at the helm of this publication but we know you are already looking at new ways to support our GMO.   We are all looking forward to working with you in new and exciting ways in the future.

I am thinking a lot about teams lately and how effective they are in our sport of dressage.  I am sure you have all experienced the good and the not so good teams at horse shows.  I was thinking about that at a big show recently when our stable had six horses there, and had it not been for everyone working together, the exhausting days would have been intolerable.  But because everyone -- and I mean everyone -- worked together, the hard work and exhaustion will be remembered as lots of fun.  The love of competition drives us to compete again, but a well-oiled, happy, and cohesive team makes the experience a lot more fun.  You win in so many ways with a supportive team.

We, your Board, continue to provide our members with educational events that will improve the knowledge of all and offer opportunities that are affordable and fun.  Please support NODA by taking advantage of these educational events.  Check out the website and this Newsletter to find information on all the opportunities that are available to NODA members.

THANK YOU TO THE FABULOUS NODA TEAM!!!!

Dee

AUGUST 2011

Dear NODA Members,

August is here and it seems summer is passing faster than I would like it to.  But as we look ahead, NODA is very excited about wonderful things we have planned for the fall and on into 2012.

Our Education Committee Co-Chairs are working very hard to put together things that will benefit our members and the equestrian population in our area.  As I mentioned last month, October 29 and 30 are the dates that NODA and Lake Erie College will host a riding clinic and lecture with Reese Koffler-Stanfield at LEC Equestrian Center.  This clinic is an opportunity for riders and auditors alike to profit from the knowledge and experience that Reese brings to dressage.  A Region II Certified Instructor/Trainer who came up through the USDF Junior/Young Rider program, she will bring her teaching talents to the equestrian population of our area.  We will be taking rider applications soon, and everyone will be welcome to audit.  All of this and more will be offered at a very reasonable price for NODA Members and LEC Students.   Mark your calendars now to save the dates.  More details will be available shortly, so watch your e-news and newsletters for updates.   To learn more about Reese,
CLICK HERE to read an article from DressageDaily.com.

Another important date is Sunday, September 17,
the date of our open meeting at Topline Stables, when we will take nominations from the floor for President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and five Directors at Large, and then present the slate of candidates.  There will be a "meet and greet" at 4:00 PM a short meeting at 5:00 PM, and then a pot luck supper.   Angela Rahn will speak on the value of massage for our equine and canine partners.  If you are interested in being on the ballot or wish to nominate someone prior to the open meeting, contact Dale Lappert at Parliamentarian@nodarider.org.

We have good news resulting from the hard work of our Professional Liaison, Mary Dana Prescott.  You may remember a couple of months ago I mentioned that Mary would be requesting feedback from NODA’s professionals regarding their support of a NODA-sponsored USDF Instructor Certification Program.  We received a positive response, and this has led the board to decide that NODA will begin to plan for the program, hopefully no later than 2013.  This program will benefit all NODA members.  Anyone can attend, either as a participant looking for certification or as an auditor.

Fran Cverna
(left) will officially take over as Membership Chair in August, and Alice Brightup will still be around to help until Fran is comfortable with the job.  Alice is not getting away completely; we already have other plans for her.  THANK YOU ALICE BRIGHTUP (right) for keeping our very large membership straight and organized.  For 11 years you have keep us and the USDF informed of additions and changes in our membership roster in an extremely timely manner.

Speaking of membership...CONGRATULATIONS TO NODA!  Alice announced at the July 11 Board Meeting that she had just logged in our 303rd member for 2011.  This is the best year we have had in a long time.  Maybe this is a good sign of the slow return of the general economy.

While we are offering up congratulations, NODA sends BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Jennifer Harding and her horse, Rotspon’s Crusader, along with their coach, Lauren Ball-Tisdale, for attaining a coveted spot on the Region II Young Rider Team.  The Young Rider Championships will be over just about the time this publication comes out at the end of July.

I only have two more newsletter issues to remind you that the deadline for applying for year-end awards is a post mark of October 22.  You also must make sure that you have earned four NODA bucks for each horse/rider combination applying for awards.  If you haven't earned your NODA bucks or made arrangements to earn them, be advised that time is quickly running out.  We are suffering from an "article drought” this summer, so we need articles for the newsletter; that is a good way to earn those NODA bucks.  There are a couple of schooling shows left, but the pickings are getting slim, so hurry and let Gail Patton know that you’d like to volunteer.  Professionals who have trouble finding time to volunteer might encourage a student to volunteer a few extra hours at a show or to write an article.   Everybody wins!  NODA gets the volunteer help, and you, the professional, get some NODA bucks earned vicariously through the student that you encouraged to volunteer.

Hope you’re having a great summer,
Dee

JULY
2011

Dear NODA Members,

The Spring and Summer have already been very busy, If you are like me, your heads are spinning and you are finding it hard to fit everything in.  We spend the cold weather shivering in our boots at the barn, riding with frozen fingers and hoping that we can get to that clinic or winter horse show without weather playing a risky role and now, without the weather worries, it seems we are on the go all the time.

Even though we are all busy, I hope that you will take five minutes to do the paperwork and write a check to support NODA's Recognized Shows through a sponsorship or an advertisement for you business.  Suzanne Carlton, our sponsorship coordinator, reports that sponsorships and ads have been coming in more slowly this year.  She and NODA work extremely hard to provide events for all our members; please support your club.  We count on all of you.  Click HERE to download the Sponsor and Advertiser Form, write that check and send it to Suzanne today.     (Registration Form also available on the RECOGNIZED SHOWS page)

Speaking of the NODA Recognized Shows, we hope you will be attending as competitors, rider supporters, NODA volunteers, or spectators. It is always a great time.   This year, like last, we will have a Welcome Tent located near the show office, so stop by, say "hi," and pick up a program and a raffle ticket for one of the nice items that will be given away over the weekend.

Last month I wrote to you in my letter that Alice Brightup, our hardworking Membership Chair, wants to move on to new challenges.  As sad as we are to lose Alice, we are equally happy to announce that Fran Cverna will be our new Membership Chair, beginning in August.  We want to thank Alice once more for all her years of work, and welcome Fran back to the Board. We are confident that Fran will be able to fill Alice's very BIG SHOES.

That being said, we hope that some of you out there are getting ready to throw your hats into the ring and run for the open spots on the NODA Board of Directors.  Consider the impact that you could have for change and new educational ideas by adding your views on dressage and dressage education in Northeast Ohio.  Please help us keep our equine friends and companions safe and cared for with good riding and continuing education.  If you are interested, contact Dale Lappert at parliamentarian@nodarider.org.  The offices that are on the ballot are:  President, VP, Secretary, Treasurer, and five Directors at Large.  NODA NEEDS YOU !

As a 501(c)3 Non-Profit Educational Organization, our primary mission is to promote
and further interest in and  understanding of dressage through education.   So it is with real pleasure that we tell you that our Education Committee Co-Chair Bernie Moauro, in partnership with Lake Erie College, has secured Reese Koffler-Stanfield for a clinic on October 29th and 30th  2011.   Reese is a USDF Bronze, Silver, and Gold Medalist.  She is a USDF Certified Instructor/Trainer through Fourth Level in Region II.   To learn more about Reese, visit her website:  www.maplecrestfarmky.com.

Bernie is also working with USDF, Region II, and LEC to finalize the contract for the Farm Vet/ USDF Adult Clinic Series featuring Lilo Fore.  The dates are set for June 30th and July 1st, 2012.

These are two "do not miss" educational events, so mark your calendars now for this year and next.  We hope all of you will be able to attend.   Watch for additional information in the coming weeks and months.  If you are interested in helping our Education Committee with these or other events, please contact Berni at berni-edu@nodarider.org  or Marcia Doyle at marcia-edu@nodarider.org.

Not to sound like a broken record, but have you earned your NODA Bucks yet?  If you plan to apply for NODA Year-End Awards, remember that you must include four NODA Bucks for each horse/rider combination.  There are several schooling shows left, so give Gail Patton a call and get yourself on the schedule.  Even if you are riding at the show, Gail may be able to arrange for you to give a half day.   Don't wait until the last show of season to volunteer, as you may find yourself out of luck.  Other good ways to earn NODA bucks are to volunteer to work on a committee or write an article for the Newsletter.

It is not too early to remind you of the deadline to submit your applications for year-end awards.  There will be no exceptions, so be sure to have your Competition Report Form(s) postmarked by October 22, 2011  There are three new awards this year.  Check them out!

The Full of Grace Award: given by Leslie Grimm.  This award is for a Draft or Draft-Cross    horse shown by the owner.  Owner can be an Adult Amateur, Junior/Young Rider or professional.  Award is based upon three scores from three different judges at any level of Recognized or Unrecognized competitions.  One score must come from a NODA-sponsored show.  Scores from different levels of competition may be combined.  A copy of registration papers or a letter verifying the horse’s lineage must accompany the submitted scores.

The Determined Effort Award: given by Niki Sackman to recognize outstanding effort by a traditional stock horse shown in dressage.  Awarded to the Junior/Young Rider or Adult Amateur riding a registered American Quarter Horse (AQHA), American Paint Horse (APHA), or American Mule (ADMS), with the highest average based upon four scores from four different judges at any level obtained at dressage schooling shows. (The judge must hold a current USEF dressage judge license or have held a card in the past or be a USDF “L” program graduate.) The four scores must be obtained from the same level of competition and at least one score must be earned at a NODA Schooling Show.  A copy of the registration papers must accompany the submitted scores.

NODA’S Lifetime Achievement Award:  This award recognizes and honors individuals who have devoted countless hours of service to NODA in the pursuit of excellence both to NODA and to our sport of Dressage.  This is to recognize not only individuals in our spotlight, but also the ones in the trenches quietly just doing the work.  This is the person you think of when you want something done, or who would remember how it has been done in the past, or who served for years doing our committee work.  It could even be those individuals who might not be active anymore but helped to create the NODA we enjoy today.  When we discuss the beginnings of NODA their names will often be mentioned.  These are important people and should be remembered and honored.  Please see additional information and nomination forms on the NODA website and in the NODA handbook.

Happy Summer,
Dee

JUNE 2011

Dear NODA Members,

There will be no mention of the weather in this letter because I am too soggy to even talk about it.  I do however want to take a moment to congratulate NODA Member and USDF 2010 Delegate Barb Soukup  on coaching  Lake Erie College's Intercollegiate Dressage Association Team to the National  Championship in Florida April 30 - May l.   We know how proud she is of her team and we are very proud of her accomplishments.
CONGRATULATIONS BARB!

A HUGE THANK YOU goes out to Janeen Langowski-Grava, Topline Stables, and Cassandra Hummert Johnson
for successfully organizing the May 14th Junior/Young Rider clinic.  Seven Juniors, ranging in age from 8 to 18, participated in this free event.  Most came with their own horses, but Topline generously supplied school horses for those who did not.  It was a good day and I think everyone had fun and got a lot valuable information to take home with them.  We hope that this is just the first free event for our Juniors, and that other professionals will be involved in the future.  You will be hearing more about this in the future from Cassandra.   If you are a professional and are interested in being a part of this program, contact Cassandra at jr-yr@nodarider.org.

The main focus of my letter this month is the election that is coming up this fall for the 2012 - 2013 term.  I also want to let you know about an opening for a position that is not part of the election but needs to filled within the next couple of months.

Our wonderful Membership Chair, Alice Brightup is stepping down.  Alice has been Membership Chair for  11 years and has done a fabulous job.  She will be missed greatly.  We would like to have someone on board by August so that the new person can be ready for the membership renewals.   Alice will certainly be around to help the new Chair get started.  If you are interested, please go to the NODA website
www.nodarider.org where you will find the full job description.   If you want additional information, please contact Alice at membership@nodarider.org.  You may also contact me directly at president@nodarider.org.  Don't be shy, come join the fun.

Last month I talked briefly about the election coming up this year for the two year term beginning January 2012, and I want to talk about it in a little more depth now.  This year we will be electing four of the five members of the Executive Board.  They are: President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.  In addition, we will elect five Directors at large. These positions are: Jr/YR Liason, Professional Liason, Member Liason, and two additional Directors,

The election of Directors at large is a change from previous election years.  In the past, members voted for only the Executive Board, while Directors at large were appointed.  This year with the revision of the by-laws, any NODA member has an opportunity to run for one of the five Director at Large positions.

From the NODA By-Laws

Section 1.  Composition.  The Board of Directors of the Association shall consist of the Executive Committee of the Association and all current Committee chairpersons.  For each officer, one additional member to the Board of Directors shall be elected from the membership at large.  In the event that the slate of Directors at large is not filled, remaining positions shall be appointed by the new Executive Board at the first meeting of the year.

The purpose of these five positions is to ensure that the makeup of NODA's Board has broad geographical representation.   Please consider one of these positions, especially if you feel your geographical area is underrepresented.

If you would like to run for office or nominate someone for any of the positions on the ballot, the last chance to do so will be at the open meeting in September (date to be announced) when we will take nominations from the floor.  But you do not have to wait until September to throw your hat in the ring.  For additional information, or to express interest in running for office, please contact Dale Lappert, parliamentarian@nodarider.org.

Watch for new videos to be posted from our pilot video project this month.  Dan was shooting at the Rocky River Schooling Show on May 29th.  Thank you again to Dan Crudele, Lauren Tisdale, and Nancy Lewis Stanton for their time and expert work on this project.  There will be additional opportunities to get your test videotaped and critiqued, so visit the website to get more information.

If you are one of NODA's 50 plus Professional members, you have received a letter requesting feedback on the possibility of NODA conducting a Trainer's Certification Program.  Please respond with your opinion to Mary Dana Prescott.  Your feedback is so very important to NODA's ability to know what educational opportunities would interest our members.

Please remember to get your volunteer hours in to be eligible for year-end awards.   Don't wait until the last show -- you may get squeezed out.   Keep in mind that we always need articles for the Newsletter, and that is a good way to earn your NODA bucks from home.

Happy Summer,
Dee

MAY 2011

Dear NODA Members,

Spring is finally here and the grass is turning green from its drab brown color.  It has been a very vibrant spring and the colors are fabulous.  The yellow forsythia has been particularly bright and abundant.  I know your horse is also enjoying the wonderful green pastures, now that the mud is drying up.

I was just thinking about how quickly the first quarter of 2011 has passed; sometimes I can't understand how time can pass so quickly when there is so much to do.  My goal is to figure out how to find 25 hours in a 24 hour day.  I want more time to do the things I love.  I find I am getting very selfish in my semi-retired years.

Even though spring began cold and wet, NODA members have been very busy.  There was an unbelievable showing of NODA members in the winners’ circle at the LEC Prix de Villes.  I suppose that rebate from NODA for half the team entry fee helped, but I don't think that was the reason.  It was cold and wet but lots of fun.  Riders were just ready to get out there and show!  It was great seeing and talking to all the people who we’ve seen only on Facebook all winter.

There is good News for NODA.  We are the lucky hosts of the USDF Adult Clinic Series for 2012/2013 for Region 2 with Lilo Fore.  The clinic is tentatively scheduled for June 30th/July 1st of 2012 at Lake Erie College.   It is going to be fabulous, with lectures and demo rides, and I know that you will all come out and support this wonderful event.  We will have more news about this event as it draws closer and information becomes available.  We haven't hosted an Adult Clinic since Walter Zettl in 2004, and couldn’t be more pleased to be hosting another in 2012.

I hope that you have had a chance to see the first video from our pilot project.  If not, take a few minutes, go to our website, and follow the link to watch NODA member Renee Alexander.  Lauren Tisdale and Nancy Lewis Stanton do a really nice job of critiquing Renee's ride in a positive and constructive way.  We have decided to continue this project because we think it provides an important educational value for everyone.

The next video opportunity at a recognized show will be at our NODA Shows on July 30th and 31st.  Here is your chance to get an excellent quality video of yourself riding a test and have it critiqued in a non-threatening way by two professionals, free of charge.  Please email Dan Crudele at DMCV
ideo@windstream.net   We are working on other way to apply this format and we hope to make it available at a couple of schooling shows.  Stay tuned for more information.

We will be surveying our professionals to see how much interest there is for a USDF Trainers Certification Program in our area.  You will be getting a letter in the mail from our Professional Liaison, Mary Dana Prescott.  Please respond, as we need your input so that NODA can concentrate its efforts on the things that work for our professionals, as well as our juniors and adult amateurs.  There is lots of grant money available from the Dressage Foundation, and certified professionals are sometimes given preference.  The USDF continues to support certification in a big way, and we really need know your thoughts on the subject.

As I have mentioned before, we want to bring the L Program to our area.  It was such a success previously, and we think it is time to do it again.  Your thoughts on that would also be very helpful.  We need input from our professionals to help us, as a riding organization, understand what we can do to serve you as well your students.  We want your support and your participation.  Let us know what NODA can do for you.  Please contact me at
President@nodarider.org, Member Liaison, Kathy Kirchner at Kathy-DAL@nodarider.org or call our Professional Liaison, Mary Dana Prescott at 440-256-8858.

Once again, NODA is looking for articles for the Newsletter.  Earn your NODA bucks by telling other NODA members about your experience with your horse.  What about a clinic you rode in?   How about something from your trainer that gave you that "Aha!" moment?  Share your learning or your horse tale with your fellow NODA members.   Send your articles to Editor
@nodarider.org.

NODA functions because of its volunteers; please support us with your time.  We need one or two people to help with the Year-End Awards Banquet, and schooling shows are always in need of volunteers.  If you like to be on the banquet committee, contact Carol Cassano at
Banquet@nodarider.org; to volunteer at a schooling show, contact Gail Patton at 440-442-5256.  Don't wait until the last minute if you plan on working towards year end awards!

2011 is an election year for NODA.  Start thinking now about your participation in your club.  We will be voting in the fall for the board of directors for a two year term beginning in 2012.   Members will elect the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and five Directors at large.  The Director at large positions help NODA obtain representation geographically from the overall membership.  The information below is quoted from our 2010 revised By-Laws.   Consider throwing your hat in the ring!  If you are interested in serving on our board and want more information, you may contact Dale Lappert, our Parliamentarian at.
Parliamentarian@nodarider.org.

Happy Show Season to all,
Dee

APRIL 2011

Dear NODA Members,

April is finally here with warmer weather, longer days, and the start of the Midwest show season.  I know I always seem to start this letter with a comment about the current weather.  Well, here in the Midwest the weather determines a lot of what goes on in our lives, especially when much of your life is lived out of doors.  We equestrians so cherish our ability to ride, and not just in an indoor arena, we also like to get outside in an outdoor arena and on the trails.  Even though it is tough, some do manage a winter trail ride now and then.  But April is finally here.  We will soon forget about the snow and cold.

A young rider I know voiced her disappointment with the recent change in the USEF helmet rule.  She is of the mind that one of the greatest rewards for attaining the upper levels of dressage is placing the coveted top hat on your head.  One of her goals was to ride down the centerline for her Freestyle in a top hat.  How many other Juniors feel the same way? How do AAs and Professionals feel about the rule change?  Those who object seem to fall into two camps:  those who feel that it is an infringement on personal freedom of choice, and those who object because they feel it is a breach of tradition.  Many do not really understand the ground breaking strides that this new rule has made.   Olympic rider Courtney King suffered a traumatic brain injury and was in a coma for weeks after a fall that occurred when her horse tripped while walking. Courtney has said, "If my accident saves ONE person from going through what I went through, it's worth it."   NODA supports this new rule and has gone one step further, asking that all competitors, no matter what level, don an approved helmet at our Schooling Shows.  We hope that all of our Professionals will set an example to help keep our members safe by wearing a helmet when mounted.  So, we have hat hair.  That can be fixed.  It's much more difficult to fix a broken or bruised brain.

Our first Schooling Show is on May 7th
.  This will be your first opportunity to volunteer at a NODA show.  To get you ready for the show season, we hope that you plan to attend our Volunteer Training Seminar at Cross Winds Farm on April 16th.  This no-charge event will help new and seasoned members alike feel more comfortable volunteering at our shows.  There will be instruction on how to scribe and tabulate, as well as the duties of Paddock Master and Ring Steward.  Please plan on joining the group.

Another event to help get members ready for the show season is the Junior Young Rider Clinic sponsored by NODA and given by Janeen Langowski at Topline Stables.  She will be giving a 45 minute riding session to a maximum of 8 Juniors on May 14th.  Please contact Cassandra Hummert-Johnson or go to:  http://www.nodarider.org   to download the flyer and the forms to apply.  Remember there are only 8 spots, so act quickly to get in on this free event.  Auditors are encouraged to attend, so come and watch our Juniors work with Janeen
.

Check out the NODA Calendar
on our website and in our Newsletter.   We have a very comprehensive calendar of events.   You should have your schooling show prize list by now; please read it carefully as there are some changes that you should know about.

Soon you will receive your prize list for the NODA Recognized Shows.  This year the dates are July 30th and 31st, a week later than usual.  Mark your calendar.   We are planning a competitors’ party on Saturday evening and are looking for a sponsor(s) to help make it a fabulous event.

Watch for updates on the next steps for our new Video Clinic Project.  This is a great idea put together by Dan Crudele, with Nancy Lewis Stanton and Lauren Ball Tisdale providing critique and commentary.  We hope that this idea will grow and become more than just a pilot project.  Please check out the website for details and schedule your competition ride for filming and commentary by these two well-respected NODA professionals.  This is free to NODA members.

Earn your NODA Bucks from home!!!  Write an article for the Newsletter.   This time of year the Newsletter is in great need of articles from our members.  Did you attend a horse event, lecture or have a good lesson with your trainer?   Did you go to Florida this winter?  Did you see Steffen Peters win the Free Style at the Masters?  Share your experience with other members who could only watch it on video.  Maybe you have a story to share about a horse or trainer that changed your life.   Even our NE Ohio winter with its snow and cold might have produced some pretty good stories.

Already in 2011 we have many new NODA members, and are thrilled to welcome you to our club.  We want to be sure you know that we have a Member Liaison, Kathy Kirchner, whose job is to hear about and do her best to solve any NODA-related problems or issues you may have.  She also likes to hear compliments about NODA!  You do not have to give your name if you don’t want to.  Contact Kathy at memberrep@nodarider.org.

Enjoy all the wonderful Equestrian Events in North East Ohio during this 2011 season.

MARCH 2011

Dear NODA Members,

Holy cow, or should I say Holy Polar Bear!!!!  Is winter over yet?  Have we had enough?  Living in the Midwest has really been a struggle this year.  I hope the rest of you are faring better than I am.  I can't get my fingers moving to buckle my horse's bridle when temperatures are in the single digits.  I see the end is near, and it won't be too soon for me.

I have been thinking a lot this winter about how we might encourage our members to be more active.  Should we revamp our volunteer program?  Do you have any ideas along these lines?   NODA depends on its members to be a successful organization.  We need your ideas -- and your participation.

On January 22 we had a wonderful symposium on the new tests given by Margaret Freeman and co-hosted by NODA and LEC.  We had over 90 in attendance.  Margaret is a fabulous speaker and did a comprehensive job of explaining the new tests.  She also answered  a lot of questions from the attendees.   A big thank you goes to Berni Moauro and Marcia Doyle for organizing this event.  We also want to thank Lake Erie College along with Dr. Geidt and her staff for co-hosting this worthwhile event with NODA.  I hope we can continue to make use of this great venue for events in the future.  Thank you also to all the wonderful volunteers who helped out.

Attention Junior Young Riders
:  We are excited to let you know that NODA will be sponsoring a JR/YR clinic on Saturday, May 14th at Topline Stables.  Janeen Langowski has offered her facility and her teaching ability to NODA junior members at no charge.  This will be open to a maximum of 8 riders.  As a participant, you will get a 45 minute lesson.  You can bring your horse or, if you can't transport in, Janeen has school horses available.  Please contact Cassandra Hammert-Johnson for information, and watch for the flyer and signup sheet on the website and in the April Newsletter.

Mark your calendar for the April 16 Volunteer Training Seminar.   Do you want to volunteer at a NODA Schooling show but are feeling shy because you think you won't know what to do?  Have you been a Paddock Master but would like to tabulate or scribe?  Now is your chance to learn about all the schooling show jobs.  Join other members for volunteer training on April 16th at Cross Winds Farm.  Learn everything you ever wanted to know about working at a NODA Show.

Spring is almost here and soon we will be basking in lots of sunshine.  Of course, along with the warmer temperatures we will also be enjoying mud.  Our horses will roll in it and we will walk in it, but isn't it preferable to frozen fingers and toes?

We are still looking for a volunteer to help Suzanne Carlton with the Sponsorships and Advertising for the Recognized Shows in July.  If you have good computer skills and a little bit of extra time, please consider volunteering for this job.  It's gobs of fun and so is Suzanne.

Remember to renew your membership before competing if you are planning to use those score for year end awards.  You must be a member prior to earning your scores.  There will be no exceptions.

Also remember to earn your NODA bucks early.  I know I keep saying this over and over, but I really think that people forget and it gets away from them and before you know it, it's too late.  So, excuse my repetition, but it may help someone remember.

NODA is always looking for member ideas and comments.  Please contact us with yours.

Happy "almost" Spring!

Dee

FEBRUARY 2011

Dear NODA Members,

I am so excited about what we are working on for 2011 and beyond.  Your NODA Board kicked off the year on January 10th and is already hard at work on programs, shows, and clinics.  Our January meeting was about the business of NODA, and also about the future of NODA.   We heard a well-received presentation from Dan Crudele for a program designed specifically to help improve the success of our rider members.  Look for information about Dan’s idea in this issue and on our website.  We ended the meeting by hearing the thoughts and ideas of all present on what they would like to see for NODA in the future.  It was a very productive meeting.  I encourage all our members to send in ideas, thoughts, and comments about NODA's present and its future.

NODA is very excited to introduce and welcome two new members of our Schooling Show team.  Krista Warnick replaces Kimberly Moody as Chairman, and Taya Workum-Byers is our new Schooling Show Secretary, replacing Fran Cverna.  This new Schooling Show team, headed up by Chris Goodall, will carry on traditions but also add their own stamp to this well-oiled machine.  Thank you again to Kimberly and Fran for your years of hard work and for laying a strong foundation that the new team can build on.

The Schooling Show Committee has already been hard at work so that your 2011 Schooling Show season will be fun and successful.  Watch for a few rule changes for the 2011 show season.  Please read your 2011 Prize list carefully when it arrives in your mailbox mid to late March.

We are going to have a couple of new year-end awards, which means more chances to win.   NODA will be instituting a ”Lifetime Achievement Award" to honor those who have given NODA years of support and volunteer hours.   We are also adding a couple of new awards sponsored by members.  There might be one that is perfect for you and your horse.

This year we have put together a committee to complete Policies and Procedures, along with completed job descriptions for NODA.  I am personally very pleased to have this project finally on track and started.   Niki Sackman will be working with me on this project and I couldn't ask for a more experienced partner.  Once the project is completed, the information will posted on the website and available to all members.

Speaking of available jobs, we have a couple positions that we need volunteers for.   We are looking for someone to work with the Education Committee and put together an "L" Program.  Developed by the
USDF Judges’ Committee, this educational training program features a faculty of experienced, USDF-approved, United States Equestrian Federation recognized “S” judges. The program offers a comprehensive curriculum created to teach participants and auditors to evaluate dressage performance at Training through Second Level.

The last time NODA sponsored an "L" program, which was in 2002, Carey Smith-Wilson organized it from start to finish, and she has generously volunteered to advise a new committee.  It was a fabulous success the last time and a lot of NODA members as well as non-members took advantage of it.  The really great thing about this program is that you don't have to be working for your "L" designation to attend.  It is a wonderful educational event on its own.  Auditors are encouraged to attend. If you are organized, work well with others, and have basic computer skills, NODA wants you.  Please call or email me if interested.

How would you like to earn your NODA bucks helping Suzanne Carlton with the Recognized Shows' Sponsorships and Advertising.  Computer skills are a must.  This job has a beginning and an end, and will require just a few months of your time.   Advertising and Sponsorships contribute much needed income for NODA programs.  If you are interested, contact me and I will provide more information.

Do not wait until the last show or event of the year  to volunteer.   If you do and there is nothing available for to earn your 4 NODA bucks, you will be out of luck!  There will be NO exceptions.   Work must be completed in the 2011 competition year.  I don't want any of you to miss out on your earned and deserved awards.

Here are a few ways to earn NODA Bucks:

*  Volunteer at Schooling Shows                          *  Volunteer at Recognized Shows
*  Volunteer at Clinics/Symposiums                      *  Host an Educational Event
*  Write articles for the NODA News                     *  Volunteer to Chair a Committee
*  Join a Committee

Another reminder for the 2011 year:  Do not let the deadline slip by for sending in your scores for year-end awards. THERE WILL BE NO EXTENSIONS.  So please pay attention to important deadline dates.

Best of everything to all of you for 2011.

Dee
